A Korean painting showing two Jurchen warriors, the Jurchen would later start to call themselves "Manchu".

INTRODUCTION
Our facebook friend Jin Kim stumbled upon some interesting historical anecdotes about Manchu archery from old Korean sources. The Korean Joseon dynasty neighbored Manchu territory and due to their initial allegiance to the Chinese Ming, they suffered several Manchu attacks in the Ming-Qing conquest period. These translated anecdotes offer the student of Manchu archery history some unique first-hand accounts previously unavailable in English. All the historical articles translated below are thankfully taken from sinsigel.egloos.com. The Koreans did not seem to have the Manchu bow, that was built to shoot heavy arrows over shorter distances, in high regard compared to their own design which was quite an advanced but fragile long distance bow. They did however acclaim the build quality of the Manchu bow and started to see how the strategy of fast horses and short range shooting did work very well in warfare. Interestingly, reading between the lines it seems they may have started their practice to cover the sinew on their bows with birch bark in following of Manchu practice.

The size conversions are on the assumption that 1 Korean bo or "step" equals 1,20 meters. Thanks to Bede Dwyer for pointing this out, and Thomas Duvernay for helping with the measurement conversion.

An account from 1599:
(This was before the conquest of China, when Manchu were still called Jurchen (女眞))

"First, rumors on the northern areas are dangerous, but I do not understand. Do they even build a castles? If they did, did they build rock castles, mud castles, or build wood barriers?
Their only weapon is bows, and they are clumsy and weak. Our bows are 10 times better than theirs. What other weapons or skills do they have other than bows?"

Comments: It is clear from this passage that the author was still rather skeptical about the threat posed by the Manchus. It would take another 45 years until they would take over Beijing.

"Their bows are very large, and they look like our yuk ryang gung (六兩弓). They use black water buffalo horn, covered from the handle up to the ear, and wrap [the other side] with birch bark. They are solidly lacquered between the horn and birch bark which prevents fish glue melting due to hot weather, rain, and humidity.

East of the border they make many bowstrings of leather. They cannot match the reflex in their bows that we have, so their arrows do not fly far. However, they are tougher and strong, and so are not effected by wind and rain as much. This makes them good for hunting and warfare. This is where our bows come short."

"The bow is covered with birch bark, and uses black water buffalo horn for its limbs. It's about one and a half times larger than ours and a little weaker. They harvest their birch bark from the 寧古塔 area, the bow cores are cut in 昌平 and 密雲, arrows are made out of wood, and fletched with feathers of the black-necked stork. (Ephippiorhynchus asiaticus)

The arrowheads are wide and long, and the feathers are attached at an angle. These are all of Manchu construction. They are good at using these long bows from galloping horses, but their arrows are weak and slow, they do not go far due to their clumsy shooting technique. They only shoot 36 meters from the horse, and 60 meters from foot."

Comments: The distance shot from foot in Qing the military examinations of the time was quite close, at 48 meters.

Late 18th century Joseon researcher's views on Manchu bows

"The horn bows that we traded from Jukjin people disintegrated only after 20 days in the water. It seems like they modified the construction of their horn bows due to the long length. The build quality is excellent. Our bow's horn and fish glue already disintegrated when the weather is just humid, so they are not useable. We need to follow the Manchu's methods of collecting a wide variety of materials to make bows.

In the 33rd year of Qianlong [1768], the exam of running forward shooting was 96 meters, and even excellent archers miss a lot, so the exam was modified to 60 meters. Hitting 2 arrows on the 60 meter target made one pass the exam. These short distances are easily hit due to the centralisation of arrows. We only respect long distance shooting, and this is not necessarily good."

Comments: Jukjin, 육진 or 六鎭 was a place just north of Joseon-era Korea.

"Chinese bows are too big and ridiculous. Their distance is only 84 - 96 meters. However, the bows are constructed with wood, and they do not get effected by dry or humid weather. We can hit targets at 240 meter, but if we misbehave on heating our bows, they cause trouble. We also can not use our bows when it's raining. How can we guarantee that the enemy will attack on a nice and sunny day?"

Finally, a suggestion to a king

"Let me suggest to make the archery system simple. I have heard rumors from soldiers who have fought many battles, that our horn bows are worse than the enemy's wooden bows. Our horn bows are the best in the world, and when a strong man shoots it, the penetration and flying distance of arrows are far beyond those of our enemies.

However, drawing it many days make the strong to be weak, and fish glue and cow tendons unravel when they get wet. This is the disadvantage of our horn bow. Also, not many warriors have horn bows, most are stored in the arsenal, and are just for filling the [required] numbers. Soldiers who have their own horn bows have old ones, and many of them are not useable anymore.

Compared to that, the enemy wooden bows can be used for a long time and stay strong in rain and humidity. Their range is no match to our horn bows but within their range the penetration is great. We shoot from very long distance so our accuracy suffers, but their wooden bows being shot on short distances, their accuracy is great. Because of this, even if our horn bows are known to be the best bows, they are less useful in actual war than our enemy's bows.

Using which weapons in war changes everything. We need to reconsider what bows to choose for war. I have heard that our people who live in mountains use wooden bows for hunting. Many soldiers fought enemies with wooden bows in Imjin year (壬辰年), and I have seen wooden bows when I was a kid. To make the wooden bows, just cut both side of a wooden stave, the length is about 2 times longer than our horn bows. Strings can be made out of ramie, and combining cow tendon and lacquer make the string much stronger. It's easy to make, water proof, kills enemies, and is not different from the enemy's bows.

So my advise is to prepare a lot of these wooden of bows. I don't mean to completely switch the type of bows our warriors have. Just mix wooden and horn bows so we keep our strong horn bows and the skills to use them, while also using wooden bows to fight enemies."

Comments: It is unclear from what year this is. In this article, Koreans called their enemies "Oh rang ke", that is usually, Xianbei (鮮卑), Khitan (契丹), Juchen (女眞), or Mongol. It is interesting that he mentions wooden bows to be used. Various Manchu tribes have in fact been known to use large mulberry longbows, some tribes even kept this up into the 20th century.
